Open Question: How to change my son's last name in Ohio?

My son is now 5 years old. His biological father (aka sperm donor) has not been in the picture since I was 3 months pregnant, so my son has never met him. I met a wonderful man when I was 5 months pregnant (which says ALOT about him, taking on a new relationship with someone else who is already pregnant) Anyhow, to make a long story short, we have been together 6 years and will prbably be getting married next year, but in Ohio in order for a stepparent to adopt we have to have been married for at least a year. My son is starting to ask questions about his last name (which is mine) but being only 5 I really don't think he can understand the whole situation without being very hurt. I do plan on telling him when he is a little older, but my question is : Can his last name be changed to my fiance's last name, without being adopted by him first? Any info that anyone has would be greatly appreciated. The sooner I can change it, the better as he has two sisters (my stepdaughter and my 2 year old daughter) that have my fiance's last name....
